“TFAPOPUP 2023 theme is The Power of Participation. This year, we will focus on the power of
artists from around the world who use their creativity and self-expression to deconstruct,
dismantle, and decolonize systems of oppression while reimagining a more equitable and
sustainable world for future generations.”
I was accepted to present my works at the Pop-Up Exhibition in South Miami along with nineteen other artists. Four of my works stood out to the curators and were put on display from the 7th of December to the 10th of December 2023. The set of four paintings is the first of my collection of seven sets. The project is “History in Plain Sight – Florida Censorship in Education.” The project focuses on the tale of two stories: the story USA wants to believe and the story of what happened. The project combines painting techniques and embroidery to show no amount of white-washing will erase the history woven into the fabric of our nation. Unlike other paintings in the gallery, my works were an extension of my teaching style; getting people involved in the art by encouraging the audience to touch the pieces, flip the booklets sewn on the canvas and look deeper into the layers of meaning behind the work. Each piece is supported by a minimum of 2 weeks of research (not including the time to execute the idea). As my first exhibition in the USA, it was an exhilarating moment of validation to know that there is a space for the work that I do.
