BTS for “Embracing Myself” Publication December 2022

I published a 3-page comic in the December 2022 Anthology from WINC International titled “Embracing Myself” as part of the edition’s theme: Love. Their manifesto supporting Black women and Women of Color in the Comic Industry facilitated a space to share my stories for three consecutive editions.

“…Women in Comics Collective International, (WinC for short, pronounced “wink”), is an artistic and informative initiative that began in May 2012. WinC serves to highlight the merit and craftwork of marginalized voices, especially that of women and Queer folx of color, who work in various industries, such as comics, publishing, gaming, media, education, and multimedia. We host educational and professional events across the country…”

The theme “Love” is overused in many different forms yet never stops to fascinate the soul. My question was how do I examine the theme from a different perspective so that the narrative resonates with people? Comics are superficially seen as spaces for superheroes and fantasy. However, just as Ghibli Studios shares stories that have quiet moments and themes relatable to the human experience, I hope to use my comics to bridge that gap to the reader on poignant topics. From that stance, I focused on “Self Love”. Using A4 Japanese comic paper, pencil crayons, nib pens, inks, and alcohol markers I brought to life my journey of healing my inner child. My preliminary sketches and scripts were done on 9″x 12″ sketching paper with pencils and inks.
