I plan (one day) to make a series of comics, cartoons, or art pieces centered around the menstruation cycle. It is not for the spiritual aspect of anchoring feminine power, though there is a certain beauty to it. I mean to create something around the jokes made through the pain, the bleeding, bloating, and the other regular occurrences when one is on their period. I remember when I lived in Indonesia, I was annoyed at the Hello Kitty drawings that were on the period packaging for the pads. My thought process was that we do not smell like roses or posies. That time of the month is not relaxing, just lots of bleeding, pain, bloating, and sometimes bouts of diarrhea. In my head, I had images of Valkyries surfing on a red sea or even death metal as the substitutes to market the pads. Fast forward, as got around to making jobs about this wonderful time – I thought of the jokes that my friends would make: “Why didn’t Mother Nature just send a text to show that we were not pregnant?” From there I sketched out an idea for the mini animation. Using markers and paper, I drew the main stills, recorded them, and then spliced them together with the voice-over and the music.
