Part of the journey in connecting to my students as an interdisciplinary teacher is organizing activities that engage the students and be a part of their core memories. I did a workshop last year at the Perez Museum and learned that if your school is in the same district as said museum, one can book a tour covered by the museum. Many students have asked if we could have a field trip and my usual reaction is “No”. However, everything aligned so that the field trip could be organized with as little cost incurred to the students as possible. The Perez Museum took care of transport to and from the museum and provided four teaching artists to tour with the different student groups.
As part of their big assignment, the students interviewed each artist with a wide range of questions about their artistic practice down to their inspirations and sketched pieces of interest. Overall, the students enjoyed the trip and I hope that this left an impact on them.
