As a teacher, writer, and researcher, art is the visual conduit through which I share my narratives and perspectives with the world. Driven by curiosity and a passion for innovation, I use quirky mediums and techniques drawn from diverse realms of visual arts and textiles, crafting immersive and interactive experiences that resonate in the person looking at the work.
\nMy art collections span various themes, from explorations of social and political issues to personal and intimate journeys that touch on eroticism. These works reflect my love for comic books, politics, current events, and the arts, as well as my academic pursuits and multicultural upbringing shaped by life in Jamaica, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Through storytelling and visual exploration, I aim to spark meaningful conversations and create connections that resonate across boundaries.<\/p>\n
MY FAVORITE SPACE FOR CREATING:<\/strong> ART PROCESS:<\/strong> EVOLUTION OF MY ART:<\/strong>
\nMy years as a traveler often led me to create in hodgepodge spots\u2014public spaces where my tools sat neatly in a container beside me as I quietly sketched. Though I\u2019ve now resettled, my process remains just as fluid and unconventional. I converted my room into a studio with shelves of material: at least 2 sets of shelving and 2 sets of drawers for textiles, and the other 2 shelving units and remaining drawers contain my acrylics, oils, hardware, books and paper; just to name a few. And similarly in how I created while traveling, my art supplies are within arm\u2019s reach. My creative chaos isn\u2019t disorder to me; it\u2019s an intentional system where everything I need is accessible and ready to spark inspiration.<\/p>\n
\nNo matter the subject I\u2019m exploring, there\u2019s always an ongoing dialogue between the material, the blank surface, and myself. I believe that the canvas\u2014or any surface\u2014already knows what it\u2019s meant to hold, and it\u2019s my role to listen and allow it to reveal itself. Even with research, gathering references, selecting materials, and prototyping, the surface leads the way. From the first mark to the final stroke, the dialogue continues until the canvas grows quiet, leaving behind a profound echo that tells me the piece is complete.<\/p>\n
\nFor a long time, I was heavily invested in gaining traction in the concept art world, particularly for sequential art, character designs and storyboards. By 2023, I decided to explore textiles for a short bit and managed to thrift a lot of material over a span of 4 months. By August (after my trip to Italy), I began to explore contemporary art with mixed media, particularly embroidery on canvas. This symbolical act of embroidering on the canvas, gave more weight, depth and permanence to the narratives that I would share. Though I still create pieces with one media, I lean towards using a plethora of material just because the possibilities seem endless. Fast forward to the present, my style comes out through bold imagery, multiple media and techniques through my work.<\/p>\n
